EFET framework agreements - energy trading with the industry standard

Anyone who has ever traded an annual band knows that even a 1 MW band results in a volume of 8,760 MWh - corresponding to the 8,760 hours of a year. At current base load prices of over 90 euros/MWh, this adds up to around 800,000 euros. Contracts must be concluded for such trading transactions.

March 2025

At Vattenfall, we have been trading electricity, gas and other commodities in many European countries for many years and, with the start of CO2 trading, also emissions certificates. We use the contract standard of the European Federation of Energy Traders - the EFET framework agreement.

EFET framework agreements have existed since 2000 and are the most widely used standard contract in wholesale energy trading. Trading under an EFET contract means that you can rely on recognized protection mechanisms and only a minimum of individual adjustments and legal checks are necessary. This simplifies contract management and minimizes the risks for both trading partners.

While municipal utilities and regional suppliers in particular often criticized the fact that EFET contracts were only available in English in the early years of energy trading, German versions are now available. We also use these.
