What is biomethane?
Biomethane is a renewable energy source produced by processing biogas. It can be used in the same way as natural gas – but with a significantly lower impact on the climate. Biomethane is suitable for use in industry, commerce and the heating market. It can also be used to generate electricity in combined heat and power plants and as a fuel in the transport market.
Origin and certification
Our biomethane comes from sustainable production and is certified in accordance with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), among others. Verification is carried out via established registers such as the dena biomethane register or Nabisy.
Regulatory framework
The legal basis for biomethane trading is diverse and subject to constant change. Vattenfall supports you in complying with relevant regulations, including:

- Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG)
- Building Energy Act (GEG)
- BEHG
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Act (TEHG)
